MAPERS mobilizes its substantial political influence in Lansing in major part as a result of representing 112 public pension and retirement systems in Michigan. These systems invest over $30 billion in public pension assets and administer pension and retirement benefits to over 220,000 retirees and nearly 500,000 active members. MAPERS is considered the leading non-state voice on public pension investments at the State Capitol.
At its bi-annual conferences, MAPERS draws top-level policy makers such as state treasurers, the chairman of the gubernatorial public pension commission, and chairs of legislative committees dealing with pensions and retirement. The conferences have also been the site of forums for the state attorney general and gubernatorial candidates.
MAPERS utilizes the services of a full-time legislative consulting firm, Capitol Services, Inc. to monitor legislation and communicate with public policy makers every day of the week. Capitol Service, which has 18 years of experience, is well known for its work on public pension and retirement issues. To enhance its access, MAPERS also maintains an active political action committee.
However, to have maximum influence, all 112 member systems need to be engaged in the process. Given term limitation, it is important that you know your state legislators, who can be accessed from this site. You are encouraged to invite them to one of your board meetings or other events you may have to bring greetings and meet your board members. MAPERS also needs you to contact your legislators when we are dealing with hot legislative issues - and to say "thank you" afterwards.
