The health and safety of our members is our top priority. Our plan is to follow, if not exceed, all safety and health recommendations of the State of Michigan and the Grand Hotel.
Michigan Executive Order 2020-115 allows venues in Regions 6 and 8 (Mackinac Island is located in Region 8) to host groups of 250, or 25% of their maximum capacity, whichever is smaller. Read full details of this EO here.
Following are the steps being taken to ensure the well-being of our members:
We will continue to monitor guidelines from health officials and will make updates or changes to our policies as restrictions are lifted. We anticipate having better clarity in August around specific details of our event.
Conference cancellation policy: Should you be unable to attend for any reason, please inform prior to August 28, 2020 and a full refund will be issued. A credit for a future MAPERS conference will be provided for cancellations received after 8/28/20. Substitutions of paid attendees may be made at any time.
Getting to the
How do I get to Mackinac Island?
Proceed northbound on I-75, take exit 337 and follow the signs to Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry. The approximate driving time from Detroit is five hours, plus a 15-minute ferry ride to the island.
Can I fly to the conference?
Pellston Regional Airport is located 12 miles south of Mackinaw City, service is provided daily by Delta Airlines through Detroit. Air taxi service between the Pellston Regional Airport and Mackinac Island Airport are available 24 hours a day. Shuttle is available
at the Pellston Regional Airport for transportation service between the
Pellston Airport and the Mackinaw City ferry docks. Transportation from other
Michigan cities is based on availability, with reservations made in advance.
Reservations are recommended for ALL transportation by calling (231) 539-7005.
Passage to Mackinac Island is provided by a few ferry boat lines. Registered guests of Grand Hotel receive a discount by using Shepler’s Ferry and can purchase tickets directly online or may show their confirmation at the ferry dock to receive the discount.
All ferry boat lines provide service from May to November. The boats operate from early morning until early evening, with frequent crossings throughout the day. All ferry boat lines operate from both Mackinaw City and St. Ignace, Michigan. Luggage transfer is simple and convenient, with assistance provided on both the mainland and Mackinac Island.

On the Island
It’s a short walk from the ferry docks to Grand Hotel. Horse-drawn taxi service is also available for a nominal fee. Taxis greet all ferry boats arriving at Mackinac Island.
Since Grand Hotel is a resort, we want all guests to feel at ease and dress comfortably. During the day, casual resort clothing is appropriate. Prior to 6:30pm please no midriff baring tops, sweatpants or cut-off shorts for ladies. For gentleman no sleeveless shirts, sweatpants, or cut-off shorts.
Every evening at Grand Hotel is a special occasion. After 6:30pm dresses, skirts, blouses, dress sweaters and dress slacks for ladies are preferred, while gentleman are required to wear a suit coat, necktie and dress pants, no denim or shorts. This applies for all areas inside the hotel with the exception of the Cupola Bar. Children 12 years and older are expected to follow the same dress code as adults.
Mackinac Island weather can be very unpredictable. Be sure to pack a rain jacket or umbrella.All receptions are held outside (weather permitting). Please pack accordingly.
Are meals included with my Conference registration?
For conference attendees and their guests staying at the Grand Hotel the following meals are included:
Lunch at the Grand Hotel on Monday, 9/14/20 is provided for all MAPERS conference attendees, including those staying at alternate hotels (excludes guests/spouse).
All conference attendees and guests, including those staying at alternate island hotels, are invited to participate in conference receptions and hospitality events.
Hotel Check-in and Check-out and Luggage
If you arrive by ferry luggage transfer is simple: your bags will be tagged and delivered directly to your room at the Grand Hotel. For your departure, follow in-room instructions. Luggage should be packed and sent down to the ferry docks a minimum of 2 hours prior to your ferry departure.

What fun activities are available on the island?
Grand Hotel’s private golf courses and tennis courts will be available for your use. Tennis is available at no charge to Conference participants. Reservations are suggested. Call 906.847.3331 ext. 519.
Horseback riding, bicycling and private carriage tours are easily arranged through Grand Hotel.
